He had announced his visit for December 2nd, on his return from the G-20 Summit in Argentina, but for a second time he cancelled it. Some say it was so as not to allow the students to march again in protest against the miserable education budget, but others argue that he doesn’t need to come to Bogotà because it’s enough to have the Colombian Ambassador in Washington as his messenger: what more does he want?
This war-mongering Ambassador of a President like Duque, who claims to be “not warlike”, has been very active proposing to gang up with the new Brazilian President for military intervention in Venezuela. And to explain the arrival of the Rapid Action Force (Fudra 3) at the Colombian border with Venezuela near the southern shore of the Gulf of Maracaibo, the Ambassador says it’s a new version of Plan Colombia.
On arrival at the location of the 5,000 troops of Fudra 3 in Ocaña he also declared clearly that it’s part of the War on Drugs. For his part, the Defence Minister Botero repeats day after day to the press the virtues of waging chemical warfare against coca growers by fumigating them with glyphosate.
If the unsuccessful War on Drugs has its diplomatic arm, it also has a judicial arm directed by the Attorney General, who carries out the judicial orders he receives from the United States. Thus the alleged evidence against Santrich (the FARC’s peace negotiator) has shown once again that it is a judicial set-up designed to extradite the former guerrilla leaders to the US, in an act of revenge which has no hint whatsoever of justice.
What does Trump gain by torpedoing the Colombian peace process?
For the warmongers in the US their South American theatre of operations would be damaged if if the Colombian military machine were to be reduced – for example – by two thirds, as occurred in Guatemala after the peace accords there. So they need to keep the Gulf Cartel active so that the DEA can stay in Colombia and the US Justice Secretary can carry on with the mission Trump gave him of “dismantling” that clan.
The third arm of the war functions in the Colombian Congress, where this week they took one more right away from the victims by denying them access to the truth; since by creating special judges for the military, the latter will no longer take responsibility for their crimes, and will be able to present them as “legitimate targets” and “collateral damage”. These are the rewards promised by ex-president Uribe to the 500,000 active troops and police and the one and a half million retired troops.
The economic arm is in the hands of Minister Carrasquilla, responsible for completing the impoverishment of the middle class with taxes, so as to hand over 20% of the national budget in foreign debt payments and 13% to the Armed Forces. This week he announced taxes on 80% of family grocery budgets, leading among other things to a 40% reduction in milk consumption.
Where do Colombia’s problems come from? From the nature of the country? From the corruption of the bureaucrats who won the elections? Or from the Colossus of the North?
For those who march in protest there is a fifth arm which criminalises them. On the one hand, it threatens and kills with paramilitary attacks, murdering one social activist every three days; and on the other, it persecutes them with legal traps and false witnesses, operations in which the Attorney General is an expert.
We cannot omit the sixth arm, that which sends us to sleep, like the soporiferous plant that produces Burundanga. Some call it the “drowsy” drug that prevents us from seeing reality, so that Colombia can look like “the second most contented country in the world”.
Trump doesn’t need to visit Bogotà, because he has a six-armed creature looking after his business there. A creature which is not like an octopus, to be honest.
We in the National Liberation Army accompany Colombian society in its resistance to Trump’s war plan, but we are also willing to make peace agreements whenever the National Government takes a decision to return to the peace talks and revive the negotiating agenda which was agreed in March 2016.
